I personally raised this with IBM seven or eight years ago and was told
that they where aware of the problem and it would be fixed. Clearly they
have not fixed it or they did and then let it break again and thus have
never heard of a unit test.

The basic problem back then was that mmbackup used various standard Unix
text processing utilities and was doomed to break if you put "special"
but perfectly valid characters in your file names.
