[gpfsug-discuss] Spectrum Scale 5.0 now available on Fix Central

Hi Steve,

I can definitely understand the want for a newer compiler, but here's a
question for you and the Scale team-- what requires the newer compiler?
The userspace tools or the kernel module? I ask because as we all know
it can be quite easy to install a modern build chain even on an older
operating system or even build binaries on a new operating system that
will run on an older operating system.

Surely the userspace components could be built with a newer compiler and
the gplbin layer would just be built with whatever compiler is present
on the system.

I suspect there's more complexity and subtlety to the issue but I
thought I'd at least ask.

I know SLES12 has been out for a while now but that doesn't mean we can
just pick up and move to a new OS without some difficulty, especially if
the older OS is working just fine :)
