I logged perhaps the original service request on this but must admit we haven’t tried it of late as have worked around the issue.

Somehow this nugget of joy (that’s most definitely sarcasm, this really sucks) slipped past my radar:

Anyone know if there’s a fix in the 4.1 stream?
In my opinion this is 100% a tar bug as the APAR suggests but GPFS has implemented a workaround. See this post from the tar mailing list:

It looks like the troublesome code may still exist upstream:

No better way to ensure you’ll hit a problem than to assume you won’t :)
