Ok, we are going to try this out and see if this makes a difference. The Windows server which is "faster" from Linux is running Server 2008R2, so I guess isn't doing encrypted SMB.

Will report back next week once we've run some tests.

Please run this command:

# mmsmb export list

export      path                     guest ok   smb encrypt
cifs        /gpfs1/cifs              no         disabled
mixed       /gpfs1/mixed             no         disabled
cifs-text   /gpfs/gpfs2/cifs-text/   no         auto
nfs-text    /gpfs/gpfs2/nfs-text/    no         auto

Try to disable "smb encrypt" value, and try again.
Example:
#mmsmb export  change  --option "smb encrypt=disabled" cifs-text

can you check what OS level this is ?
i have seen reports from issues with RHEL 7 clients and SMB

We've had some reports from some of our users that out CES SMB exports are slow to access.

It appears that this is only when the client is a Linux system and using SMB to access the file-system. In fact if we dual boot the same box, we can get sensible speeds out of it (I.e. Not network problems to the client system).

They also report that access to real Windows based file-servers works at sensible speeds. Maybe the Win file servers support SMB1, but has anyone else seen this, or have any suggestions?
